Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco and Bolinas Community Land Trust Begin Construction on Eight New Affordable Homes for Low-Income Families in Downtown Bolinas

The innovative partnership and community-centric approach expands access to affordable homeownership and helps prevent displacement in West Marin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif, (January 14, 2026)Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco (Habitat Greater San Francisco) and the Bolinas Community Land Trust (BCLT) announced today that construction is underway on eight permanently affordable townhomes at 31 Wharf Road in downtown Bolinas. The project will provide much-needed homeownership opportunities for low-income, first-time homebuyer families in a community long strained by the lack of affordable housing. The development includes two buildings featuring six 3-bedroom townhomes, two 2-bedroom townhomes, and two ground-floor commercial spaces.

The two nonprofit organizations have formed a first-of-its-kind partnership between a community land trust and a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, built on a deeply community-centric approach that keeps local residents involved at every step. That commitment and community engagement was evident at the October 15 launch event, where Bolinas community members gathered to celebrate a major milestone in the long-planned project and expressed enthusiasm for the work ahead.

“This project is vital to the future of our community, and it’s inspiring to see such strong local support and positive momentum," said Annie O’Connor, Executive Director of the Bolinas Community Land Trust. “In the Bolinas-Stinson School District, nearly 75% of our community’s full-time residents are low-income and at risk of being displaced. We are committed to preserving the diversity and character of Bolinas by ensuring that local families have access to affordable homeownership and can stay in the community they love. This project represents the culmination of years of work by our community to address the housing crisis and safeguard the future of Bolinas.”

Construction begins at a time when homeownership has become increasingly unreachable for many local families. The average home price in Bolinas now hovers above $1.73 million, and the area’s housing expenses exceed the national average by 147%. Prices are being driven up in part by the conversion of many homes in this coastal community into vacation homes and short-term rentals. As a result, many longtime Bolinas residents can no longer afford to live near their jobs, their children’s schools, or support networks.

“Homeownership not only provides families with a foundation for long-term stability, but it also helps build strong, vibrant communities. As housing costs continue to rise in West Marin, innovative solutions to combat displacement are more urgent than ever. Our partnership with BCLT allows us to bring more affordable homeownership opportunities to a community that urgently needs it and help local families stay rooted in Bolinas for generations to come," said Maureen Sedonaen, Chief Executive Officer at Habitat Greater San Francisco.

The project builds on the success of the partners’ previous collaborations. In 2023 and 2024, Habitat Greater San Francisco and BCLT completed four affordable single-family homes on Overlook Drive and Aspen Road, reinforcing their shared commitment to long-term affordability in Bolinas.

The Wharf Road project recently received $2 million in CalHome funding, the state’s only program dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable, for-sale homes. It is a prime example of how CalHome helps address the housing crisis by providing stable homeownership opportunities for local families and underscores the importance of restoring the program in the 2026 state budget.
